Carpets; Image of Reality or Dream

This documentary series takes a careful look at the aesthetics of Iranian motifs which have recursive similarities and differences in different cultural and geographical areas of Iran.

The Knot investigates the origin of these motifs and follows the course of their change and evolution. It tells us of the relation between the carpet and architecture and, besides all, attempts to approach the spirits, feelings, joys and sorrows of the designers and weavers of these motifs by means of a theatrical character starred by the well-famed Iranian actress Roya Nonahali.

Iranian carpet designers, carpet weavers and architects used to chant songs while working, songs about their hopes and pains. At the present time only a few of them have survived and still fewer sing those songs while weaving carpets.

Based on a research on the remnants of those poems, Faroughi, who himself writes poetry, wrote several lines, which the actor starring as the carpet weaver sang in different stages of her life in different geographical locations of Iran, recounting her realities, her dreams, her joys and her life and at the same time weaving them all onto the carpet.

In addition to examining various Iranian motifs on rugs, carpets and fabrics, this documentary travels to various regions of Iran and delves into their culture, rituals and music. The story of the carpet is very similar to that of the cinema, because they are both a mixture of art and industry.

The knot is a musical documentary in which poetry and music play substantial roles. Also in this documentary the issues of traditional and modern management of Iranian carpet industry, holding a venerable stance in the world, have been put into scrutiny.

This documentary is produced in Iran in 26 episodes of 30-minute-long programs.
